CURRENT SPECIES & FINISHES

We create products with sustainably sourced materials, finishes so safe doctors recommend them, and in some cases creating something new from what could have been thrown away.

As some of our products use reclaimed material from trees felled by natural causes, we may only be able to offer some things for a limited time. Below you will find where those exact trees came from, as well as all of our other materials we use to make every product.

SOLID BAMBOO PLYWOOD

Used for table tops, shelves, and any other flat surface. We've invested heavily into the industrial design of our furniture to offer incredible quality without the usual pricetag. Our choice of bamboo offers us strength comparable to Oak, but in a much more controlled and sustainable material. Our bamboo plywood is emissions-free, 100% FSC and CARB II certified.

  • American Walnut, "Pure" Rubio-Monocoat Finish
  • Shamel Ash, milled from a fallen tree in Los Angeles, "Pure" Rubio-Monocoat Finish

SOLID AMERICAN HARDWOOD

Used for our leg hardware, we only choose sturdy, domestic hardwood from 100% FSC Certified forests or from locally felled trees diverted from the landfill. While it's common to see lesser woods stained to fake more expensive species or softer woods hidden under paint, we offer the real deal and finish our woods to showcase this.

CLEANING & MAINTENANCE

Calico furniture is different from most other furniture manufacturers--we don't use plastic finishes or fake veneers in the construction of our products. We prefer the absolute best natural finishes you can get..

For stains and blemishes, we've broken this topic down into two categories: painted surfaces, such as table legs with Milk Paint and AFM Safecoat, and finished wood surfaces, finished with Rubio Monocoat.

PAINTED SURFACES

Periodic dusting should be done with a high quality, dry microfiber cloth. We include one with every initial purchase. If you have to purchase one, we recommend Buff brand cloths.

For blemishes or stains, use a bit of warm water on a high quality cloth and blot immediately. The cloth should be damp, not wet. Do not use any cleaner or soap with pigments, scent, alcohol or otherwise.

For scuffs and scratches, use an appropriate wood paint marker. Apply a small amount of clear furniture wax and polish to match.

FINISHED WOOD SURFACES

Periodic dusting should be done with a high quality, dry microfiber cloth. We include one with every initial purchase. If you have to purchase one, we recommend Buff brand cloths.

For blemishes or stains, damped a high quality microfiber cloth with the wood soap (RMC Natural Soap) included in your Care Kit and blot immediately. The cloth should be damp, not wet. Do not use any other type of soap.

For small scuffs and scratches, you may apply a small amount of finishing oil or wax and buff out. For deeper cuts, lightly sand area and apply RMC Plus 2C. RMC Universal Maintenance Oil may be applied to the entire piece every 3-5 years to revive sheen.
